Questions and AnswersWhat should you expect when beginning a martial arts study? Of course, each person will have their own unique questions. But we will try and answer some of the most common questions asked before a student signs up. What will I learn? At Hudson Kenpo, we teach the art of Ed Parker's American Kenpo. The curriculum of American Kenpo includes Techniques, Sets, and Forms that encompass the rules and principles of motion. A technique is a prescribed self-defense response for a prescribed attack. A set is a sequence and series of moves featuring common attributes; such as a series of blocks, or a series of strikes. A form is a dance-like choreographed catalog of motion that permits a student to review and study self defense without a partner. Our younger students participate in our Three Prong Program of Home, School, Karate. Beyond what is learned on the training mat, we expect our younger students to demonstrate a positive, respectful attitude in the Home. Also, we focus on the academic achievements in the Schools. We expect our students demonstrate respect, and strive for excellence in the classroom. We request that students bring in all progress reports and report cards. When do I come to class? At Hudson Kenpo, we have classes Monday through Saturday each week. Our full schedule is viewable here. Students may participate in any or all classes appropriate for age and rank. All students work on the various techniques, sets, and forms every week. They are foundation of our course of study. Our classes begin with light calisthenics, and often, the classes for our younger students include fun activities. But the focus of our class is the art of American Kenpo. Is there a contract? No. In order to progress and succeed, students must attend class regularly. At Hudson Kenpo, we encourage a minimum of a one year commitment. However, there are no binding contracts at Hudson Kenpo. When do I get a Black Belt? Every student is unique, which means there is no single answer to this question. At Hudson Kenpo, we recognize proficiency through a belt ranking system. There are eight colored belt ranks before achieving a Black Belt. Students must demonstrate proficiency at all of the required material for each rank, before being elevated to the next. With over 150 techniques required to earn an Adult Black Belt, we believe students should keep the focus on one belt at a time. Yeah, but, when do I get a Black Belt? Okay. Our Little Dragon program does not have a black belt recognition. Kenpo Kids can earn a Junior Black Belt in about three to four years, by demonstrating proficiency at 60 various techniques, 5 forms, and 6 sets. Adult students can earn a Black Belt by demonstrating proficiency at 151 self-defense techniques, 7 forms, and 12 sets. An Adult Black Belt will take between four and six years for the average student. But, really, we believe students should remain focused on one belt at a time. Does it work? Yes. At Hudson Kenpo, we sincerely hope you never need to use the self-defense stylings of American Kenpo. We hope you don't find yourself in a situation where you need to defend yourself physically. In fact, most of us rarely find ourselves in those situations. However, after even a short time training, you will acquire skills that are effective in responding to an attack. What about . . . As we said above, we know there are as many questions as there are individuals. We look forward to having the opportunity to address each and every one of your questions. Please Call Mr. Hogan at (603) 595-4507. Or even better, stop in some evening when a class is taking place. Watch first hand how our classes proceed. Please understand, while we are on the training mat, our instructors must remain focused on the training activities. We will be able to answer you questions after the conclusion of the lessons. |
